Field Archaeology

The Société Jersiaise archaeologist is privately funded by a generous benefactor, which is a wonderful gift, for which the Société are extremely grateful.

The archaeologist functions in a heritage capacity, monitoring the Island’s historical assets, and conducting rescue archaeology where necessary. Based at Pier Road, they also use the Section rooms at La Hougue Bie.

It is part of their remit to investigate Jersey’s past, and the archaeologist will organise and run digs where sites are of particular interest, in conjunction with the Archaeology Section. They liaise constantly with Jersey Heritage Trust, who work in a curatorship capacity, and the two organisations combine their archaeological expertise.

The archaeologist will also liaise closely with the Historic Environment team in Planning to ensure that all Société Jersiaise sites are properly maintained, and the correct permissions are received for any invasive work.

The archaeologist maintains strong links with their French and UK counterparts in order to increase the understanding of our Island’s history, and regularly organises international seminars and conferences.
