From Celtic Hoards to Medieval Coinage

The Section was invited by the Education Team at Jersey Heritage to talk about the Middle Ages to students at Grainville School. We took French and English medieval coins to show the class, as these were in circulation in Jersey during this period, along with some artefacts found from that time.

Late in June, we also spoke to students from D’Auvergne School at LHB about the Celtic hoard, how the coins were manufactured, and the mixture of different metals (copper, silver and gold) that were used to produce the coins. We had taken some Celtic coins for them to pass around, and they were surprised by how heavy they were.

We were delighted to receive positive feedback from D’Auvergne School via Jersey Heritage. The school described the visit as “a genuinely one-off experience” for the children and thanked both our coin expert David and Richard for helping to bring the story of the hoard to life.
