La Section de la Langue Jèrriaise has been formed in order to encourage the use and study of our native language and culture. We hope to provide an opportunity to preserve and promote the Jersey way of life. We also hope that a programme of teaching Jèrriais could be available in schools so that the future generations would not forget the language of their ancestors.

We are a diverse group of SJ members with one major thing in common – a passion for the Jèrriais language and its continued place in the society and culture of Jersey. But while upholding the stated aim of the SJ ‘to preserve our ancient language’ above all we want to enjoy it. Between us we have a wide range of ability in Jèrriais and it isn’t necessary to be able to speak it fluently, or even at all, to enjoy our meetings. These are usually held on the first Wednesday of each month, at 5.15pm, mostly at Pier Road but often out around the island – to exercise our vocabulary, and to share stories.
To add even more variety we have satellite groups for singing and dancing. Some of our members also work at sorting, listing and transcribing Jèrriais texts etc. to ensure these are available now and for future generations and others at making Jèrriais more widely available online. As examples of ‘away’ sessions – last year we spent a memorable evening in the agricultural collection at Samarès Manor. This year we have had a visit to the Museum – for which our chairman had devised a fun, but challenging, quiz. Later in the year we’ll be at Churchill Park getting to grips with the identification of trees and plants – in Jèrriais, English and even Latin. We’d love to welcome you to a section meeting –
‘Nou s’sait enchanté d’vos atchilyi siez- nous’
