Botany Section.
Members of the Botany section are concerned at the arrival of a very invasive South African grass Ehrharta erecta Panic Veldt Grass. So far this grass has only been found in St. Brelade. Members have been working with the Environment Department to remove this grass. It grows rapidly, especially in this recent heat, seeds and reproduces in about six weeks, so the spread is rapid. Recently the section visited the pond at Woodbine where a pond plant has re-emerged thanks to recent management of the pond. It is a spectacular plant Butomus umbellatus Flowering Rush. This plant likes disturbance, hence the reason it has reappeared. At the site we also found Phalaris arundinacea Reed Canary-grass, a tall grass that has not been recorded for many years. Another nice record was of Ranunculus hederaceus Ivy-leaved Crowfoot.
