Geology Section – July update

During July the Geology Section continued to visit the various archeological sites owned by the Société, in order to provide geological assessments to contribute to site Conservation Plans.

La Couperon Dolmen in St Martin was visited and it was determined that the dolmen was constructed entirely of stone of the Rozel Conglomerate Formation. The second field visit in July was to La Hougue des Platons in Trinity. It was not possible to properly observe all of the stones at this site as it was, in part, heavily overgrown. However, it was apparent that apart from one block of granite, the rest of the structure was constructed of local volcanic ignimbrite and tuff blocks.

On  Wednesday 13 August, the Geological Section will meet at Green Island at the earlier time of 18:30 for a field visit to be led by Dr Mike Andrews, to look at the complex igneous geology that can be observed in the outcrops in the area. The second meeting will take place on Wednesday 27 August and will be a visit to another archeological site, the location and time of which will be announced to members by email in due course.
