In June, a group of around 14 Geology Section members and prospective members, including several professional and retired geologists, were welcomed by Kirsten Du Heaume and Mike Osbourn of SigmaRoc PLC for a fascinating visit to Ronez Quarry. The group travelled more than 100 metres below the quarry rim, stopping at three locations to hear explanations of the geology exposed within the workings.
The group showed particular interest in the boundary between the diorite and granite that runs across the quarry, a lamprophyre dyke, and granite intrusions into the diorites.
Kirsten explained that there are still many years of resources available within the quarry, despite the company having begun backfilling some of the earlier excavations, which extended more than 20 metres below average sea level.
