Following on from a Bryophyte walk led by Lyn Jones, the Botany section had a Moss identification meeting. Members collected specimens of Moss and bought them to the meeting and attempted to identify them, usually succeeding thanks to identification cards and books. The larger Pleurocarpous Mosses are the easier specimens to identify and we concentrate on those specimens.

Recently the Botany Section held a find some Violets for Valentine’s Day walk. We succeeded in finding some clumps of Violets in flower, the earliest flowering Violets found on Jersey which are Viola oderata Sweet Violet. About 20 folk attended the walk along a short section of the railway walk, where besides Violets we found Petasites fragrans Winter Heliotrope, Ficaria verna Lesser Celendine and Ruscus aculeatus Butcher’s Broom all in flower.
