The Field Archaeology Department of La Société Jersiaise has just finished an excavation at St Lawrence and the backfilling of the site was completed on Friday the 29th of August. Over three weeks, with the help of our fantastic volunteers, we uncovered and explored a small rural settlement dating back to the Iron Age. A short presentation was given on Friday 22 August, which was attended by several dozen people. We are really pleased to see how much interest this project has generated, both among the public and within La Société Jersiaise.
Even though the excavation itself is now complete, the work is far from over. The next stage will focus on cleaning the finds, studying and drawing them, and preparing the excavation report over the coming months.
I would like to warmly thank all the volunteers who took part in the dig, and more especially Marc Yates, Head of the Archaeology Section, and Dave Le Long, Head of the Numismatic Section. None of this would have been possible without their support. And thanks to everyone following the project for helping us to shed light on a chapter of Jersey’s history that had remained unknown until now. We will keep you informed during the post-excavation work.
