For our April Meeting we invited Perry Mesney, Finds Liaison Officer at Jersey Heritage to deliver a talk surrounding Roman history in Jersey.
The Romans have been somewhat neglected in our chronology and for many years it was not considered there was a significant presence in Jersey during the era.
However, recent finds are beginning to change historical opinion. Perry explained that many Roman coins have been found, in addition to various high status objects including equestrian equipment. These are indicative of a higher degree of interaction with, or presence of the Roman Empire than previously reckoned. Although, more research is required through evaluation of the existing records and also through new excavations.
We also invited the members of the Archaeology and Numismatics Sections to attend so it was a bit of a get together for all the historical Sections within the Société. The event was also opened to members of the public, in the hope that we might inspire some new historians, archaeologists, and numismatists!
The talk was very interesting and well attended and we hope to invite Perry back in the future to discuss Post-Roman or Medieval finds reported through the scheme.
