Those with an interest in heritage and politics, will no doubt be aware of the plans to redevelop Fort Regent into a concert/leisure venue fit for the 21st Century.
The History Section were invited to a consultation with the Jersey Development Company which was attended by our member Bernard Place who relayed us the latest developments.
Bernard’s report highlighted some interesting proposals from a heritage perspective. The topic yielded much discussion from members who were eager to give their opinion on the matter, particularly in the political sphere!
With its commanding views Mont de la Ville was a site which had seen some form of occupation since antiquity, and the Fort as it stands today remains a fine example of a Napoleonic era fortification. Its conversion to a leisure centre in the 1960’s and 1970’s also provided us with an icon of the Jersey skyline, the Queen’s hall with its famous dome.
Photos taken by Alan Carter who was site manager at the time of the construction of the dome and sweeping roof.

We also had our usual round the table discussion during which members discussed their interests.
David Dorgan’s contribution was of note since he has recently completed his book The History of Shooting in Jersey from 1337 to the present day. He is currently arranging its publication through Amazon.
Our next meeting is on 17th March and will feature our usual round the table discussion.
We are always looking for new members, so if you’d like to join us please contact history@societe.je
