Are you able and willing to join the Société Jersiaise team?
We are looking to recruit an Honorary Treasurer to join our dynamic Board at the Société and take over from our current Treasurer whose term is ending. The Société is a charity and exists to study and record Jersey, its history, its language, its archaeology and its natural environment and we have been doing that since 1873.
We really need the right person to take up the role and play a part with us at an exciting time as we adapt to a rapidly changing future and aim to reach further future milestones from our formation!
Could you be the person to fill the role?
The role of Treasurer may suit someone who works or has worked in the finance industry. It could be undertaken as part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy of your employer – as indeed our current Treasurer did!
The Board has a primary and collective responsibility to manage the Société’s finances, and as Treasurer you would take the lead within the Board in oversight of financial management and help the Board with its collective responsibility. The role does not involve bookkeeping or preparing accounts which are done by our admin team, bookkeeper and accountants. Experience in managing funds, understanding financial statements and/or having governance experience would be an advantage. As Treasurer, you would be like other Board members who take the lead on different aspects of the Board’s collective responsibilities to ensure that the tasks are spread around.
The Board takes its responsibilities seriously. The current Board, under the leadership of our immediate past-President, initiated a thorough review and restructuring of the Société’s finances. We implemented the use of accounting software to be used by our bookkeeper and administration team and engaged new accountants to prepare our interim and annual financial statements and reports in compliance with our legal obligations and good governance. We also introduced a new member management software system to manage our most important asset, our members!
Other recent progress made by the Board has been in adopting a long term 10-year strategy (“At the heart of the Island’s knowledge”) involving further change to take account of present-day issues and challenges and to make the Société and its work more accessible and well known.
The time commitment revolves around a schedule of a monthly two-hour board meeting and an AGM. The Board meetings are scheduled at 5.15pm to allow those working office hours to attend.
