This National Volunteer Week, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all the incredible volunteers at the Lord Coutanche Library. Your generous gift of time, skills, and knowledge makes a lasting impact year after year, and we are truly grateful for your ongoing support and dedication.

A few words from some of our volunteers

To mark National Volunteer Week, we would also like to highlight the voices of those who generously give their time to the Lord Coutanche Library. Here is what they have shared about their experiences:

J.S., volunteer at the Lord Coutanche Library. ‘Growing up in Jersey, I longed to explore what the Island was like before the war—before the airport opened, and when transport was horse-drawn. Twenty years ago, by volunteering in the Photographic Archive, I found myself doing just that.
More recently, I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Société Jersiaise’s Librarian, and I’ve discovered a vast range of books and publications all about the Island. I’ve sorted newspaper cuttings and prints, listed 17th-century documents, and done some translation work, as I speak French. The work is enjoyable and always has Jersey at its heart.’

D.W., volunteer at the Lord Coutanche Library. ‘I decided to volunteer after attending a talk given at the Société Jersiaise, where they mentioned they were looking for volunteers. Over the years, I’ve met some interesting people and learnt more about the Island.
I would encourage anyone to try volunteering, as it provides an interest outside the home. I’ve been coming to the Lord Coutanche Library for several years and have enjoyed the various tasks I’ve been given. So, if you have some spare time, give it a go!’

S.B., volunteer at the Lord Coutanche Library. ‘I enjoy the history of Jersey and liked the idea of helping to list items to make them accessible to a wider audience. I’ve learnt more about the maps of Jersey and neighbouring countries. So, give it a go! You’ll meet new people and learn something new.’

J.T., volunteer at the Lord Coutanche Library. ‘As a member of La Section de la Langue Jèrriaise, I’m helping to preserve and promote Jèrriais. I’ve developed good relationships with other volunteers and the Librarian. I encourage others to join the Société Jersiaise.’
