Reflecting on a Fantastic Visit by Dr George McGavin

In June our new President, Gregory Guida, invited the renowned UK entomologist, zoologist and natural history TV presenter, Dr George McGavin, to Jersey.
Amongst various engagements whilst in Jersey Dr McGavin gave a really entertaining and fascinating public talk at the Société Jersiaise headquarters at Pier Road to a packed audience.
Dr McGavin’s talk entitled ‘What have insects ever done for us’ both interested and amused the attentive audience explaining with hard-hitting truths, anecdotes and personal stories as to how humans are negatively impacting insects and, conversely, how a lack of insects affects humans.
There were laughs and gasps in equal measure as Dr McGavin brilliantly weaved his way through the long-standing interactions between insects and humans in all its gory glory!
A fun and educational evening was had by all.
And then the next morning, at a time of day far too early for most sane animals, members of the Entomology Section went moth trapping with Dr McGavin at Samarés Manor, led by Allison Singleton and Kim Koester.
An impressive haul of a wide variety of moths soon woke everyone up and opened their eyes in wonder at the colourful array of everything from large hawk-moths to diminutive micro-moths.
