The Société Jersiaise recently took part in the 2026 Jersey Skills Show. We presented the organisation, its activities and the different career opportunities linked to heritage and research. The event provided a very good opportunity to engage with young people and present various fields of research and possible career paths, using the resources from our Departments and Sections.
Several activities were successful. An archaeological “dating game” attracted interest and was organised as a challenge, while the stereoscope helped to generate conversations with students and visitors. These activities showed that interactive experiences and unusual objects/artefacts are effective ways to engage with younger audiences.
Our first participation to the event also provided us with useful feedback for future participation. Preparing more resources about Jèrriais lessons and conversation groups as well as preparing a poster highlighting heritage-related careers within the Société’s different sections could help to respond to students’ questions. Simple take-away materials introducing the Société and its activities would also be useful
The Skills Jersey Show was a good opportunity to introduce the Société to a younger audience and identify ways to develop its presence at future events. We are looking forward to taking part in the 2027 edition.
