Join us to explore the new exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of Jersey’s Liberation, now on display in the Members’ room showcase.
Discover a selection of items from the Lord Coutanche Library’s collection, including a parcel from the Canadian Red Cross, a copy of The Evening Post dated Wednesday, 9th May 1945, a German Occupation Diary by James C. Vincent, and Liberi Gaudeamus, a symphonic cantata by P. G. Larbalestier, composed to celebrate Jersey’s Liberation following five years of German occupation (1940-1945).
The exhibition also features telegrams and messages offering congratulations on the Liberation, Reoccupation of the Channel Islands cards, ration books and coupons, as well as banknotes issued during the German occupation and designed by Edmund Blampied. You’ll also find flags presented to James Robert Hanson on Liberation Day—who served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. 15th Cavalry—and a unique poster crafted from tinned food labels, originally from Red Cross food parcels sent aboard the Vega.
