The Section began its Section meeting in May with the first site visit of the year to an historic property at No16 Regent Road where one of our members resides. This was once the home of Lilian Grandin, Jersey’s first woman doctor.
Repair work being undertaken had revealed part of the building structure and this led to interesting discussion about the origins of this property, which was probably built in the late 18th century, and about the likely date of subsequent alterations that had been made. This work included the addition of two extra floors, as well as a porch and veranda at the rear.
Close inspection revealed many points of significance, including the original staircase, the tiled floor of the rear porch and veranda, and the details of the entrance steps, iron railings and boot scraper on Regent Road, all of which are likely to date from the 1790s. This visit reawakened an interest in the historical and architectural importance of Regent Road and La Chasse, where further research would be justified. We would be grateful if members who have knowledge or memories of buildings in this area could get in touch.
